On 20 Jun 73, F-14 #6 was testing missile separation when a missile, an AIM -7E-2 in the #4 position, the farthest aft in the tunnel between the engines, is fired. Properly, the missile is supposed to fall from the airplane before the missile's engine ignites. In this case, the missile didn't drop very far, it got ahead of the plane, on the left side, and started tumbling and coming apart. Pieces went into the plane's left intake. There is an interesting article, by the pilot, on the internet. He also has quite a sense of humor about the incident.
