"Deja Vu"

Harm and Meg are in Washington D. C. in the fourth episode of JAG's "lost" season one, investigating the murder of a USN officer at Arlington National Cemetery after a function at the Thai embassy. They earn the ire of Metro PD Detective Axelrad who is also tasked with solving the murder and the people in charge at the Thai embassy as well, with a very good twist at the end. In many regards, the episode is quite reminiscent of an NCIS episode.

The saxophone-loving Commander Lindsey is temporarily in charge of JAG replacing Admiral Brovo, who has apparently departed to an unknown posting. The new JAG commander seems to be a bit of a naive fool, especially when it comes to matters of state and plausibility deniability. Not sure what the producers were going for there, but it doesn't work. The officer in charge of the Judge Advocate General is no slouch when it comes to politics and playing the game in DC. Certainly, Lindsey has none of the gravitas and hard edges of future JAG commander Admiral AJ Chegwidden.

Importantly, "Deja Vu" fleshes out some more of Harm's backstory, seeing him recall his bid to find his missing POW father in Vietnam, because he sees a woman at the Thai embassy who reminds him of a woman he knew whilst there. Harm's search for his father would, of course, become a major subplot throughout many seasons of JAG.

You gotta base your successes on good foundations

I have watched this series several times in the past, but have only now been struck by the realisation of a parallel. There has always been a strong vein of comedy weaving through the darker and harder themes of the series, and it was seeing Cmdr Ted Lindsay's incompetent performance on the clarinet (presumably an attempt to ingratiate himself with Admiral Brovo - who is clearly a complete politician) that triggered a memory of a similar scenario. It was of the BBC Light Programme (radio) series The Navy Lark, broadcast between 1959 and 1977. The officers (Leslie Phillips, Stephen Murray and Richard Caldicot) were seldom in control of the situation, however their frigate found herself. It was the Chief Petty Officer (Jon Pertwee, before he got snapped up by Dr Who) and the Able Seamen (Ronnie Barker and Tenniel Evans) who saved the day, to my memory. I think there is a strong link between the really incompetent characters of Cmdr Ted Lindsay and Sub Lt Phillips. Kudos to the writers for recognising this gem.
