While conducting a NATO exercise in the Adriatic Sea and while emerging from a blinding fog, a US frigate collides with a Turkish destroyer -- due in part to the presence of a Greek destroyer escort nearby, ostensibly to protect the claim of Greece to a small uninhabited island. The SecNav orders RAdm. Chegwidden himself to prosecute the commanding officer (CO) of the US ship -- because he has received politically motivated orders from above to appease NATO and the other nations involved. Displeased and uncomfortable, the admiral directs Harm and Mac to provide the accused CO with a vigorous defense, and they gladly comply. After some courtroom fireworks the attorneys work out a solution which serves the interest of justice. Meanwhile Mikey Roberts, Bud's brother, visits Bud and Harriet, meets Gunny's sister, from New Mexico, and finds her attractive and interesting, but finally Mikey gets a disappointing surprise. Did You Know?

The fictitious US ship here is USS Monroe Smith (FFG-62 or FFG-63). The crewmembers wear baseball caps bearing the hull number FFG-63, but a plaque at the ship's bell bears the number FFG-62. The fictitious ship may or may not be named for David Monroe Smith, an enlisted soldier of the US Army, who died in action in 1950 during the Korean War, and who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his "conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage" -- that is, for having flung himself upon an enemy grenade, thereby sacrificing himself but saving five fellow infantrymen. In the US Navy there is no frigate bearing the number of 62 or 63. The one with the highest number is USS Ingraham (FFG-61). See more »

At the end of the final conversation, as the recently relieved skipper turns and walks away toward his home and his retirement, the boatswain's mate of the watch announces "captain departing". The correct and traditional call should be "commander, United States Navy, departing". Besides, the boatswain's mate should have made his call as the former skipper stepped over the side of the ship, not as he, already ashore, stepped away from the outboard end of the brow. While Cdr. Merrick was still the CO, he was properly addressed and described as "captain" despite his rank, and the calls of the boatswain's mate, using the name of the command, would be "Monroe Smith arriving" or "Monroe Smith departing" as the skipper stepped aboard or ashore. Again, though, in the circumstances here the correct call should be "commander, United States Navy, departing". See more »
