THE ISLANDERS – To Bell a Cat – 1961

The ISLANDERS was one of a bevy of late 1950's and early 1960's series that were set in far off areas of the Pacific. These would include, BEACHCOMBER, FOLLOW THE SUN, HONG KONG and the most famous, ADVENTURES IN PARADISE. This particular series, THE ISLANDERS ran for a total of 24 episodes during 1960 and 61. The series follows the trio of William Reynolds, James Philbrook and Diane Brewster. They are running a one plane (An amphibious Grumman Goose) airline out of the Moluccas Islands. Of course every week is a new adventure with a healthy amount of bad guys popping up. This episode is the 17th of the production run.

Pilot James Philbrook and his business partner, Diane Brewster, are having a few drinks in the local bar. A fight breaks out when a drunk, Harry Townes, get caught lifting drinks from various tables. Local, Sam Jaffe, picks up Townes and offers him a place to stay. He sobers the man up and soon has him working around his house. Townes is seems does not recall who he is, or where he is from.

Now we flash to the Netherlands where a judge, Greg Martin, and a woman, Luana Anders are talking about a Nazi Collaborator. There have been reports of the hunted traitor hiding out in the former Dutch East Indies. The man was responsible for the death of Ander's father and 20 others.

Anders and Martin fly out to Java and then to Molucca in search of the man. They only have a description of the fellow, no photo. In no time at all, they track down the drunk, Townes. Townes seems spot on as the traitor described in the reports. Judge Martin does not believe for a minute that Townes is suffering from amnesia. Sam Jaffe helps matters along by saying that Townes had spoken about being in Holland during the war.

The judge and Miss Anders enlist the help of Brewster, and pilot Philbrook, to grab up Townes and transport him to Java. Needless to say things are never that cut and dried. It turns out that the Nazi type is really Jaffe. He has been setting up Townes to take the fall for his traitorous actions.

This episode is not exactly a barn burner. The story is rather lacking in any sort of tension.
