Adapted from a trilogy of books by the female Anglo-Irish novelists Somerville and Ross.

Farce becomes whimsy in this Channel 4 comedy series The Irish R. M.

Major Sinclair Yeates (Peter Bowles) sees no future for himself in the army. He does not have enough money or prestige to go up the ranks. At the Regimental Ball in 1897, he confides to his beloved Philippa (Doran Godwin) that he has accepted the post of Resident Magistrate in the west of Ireland.

Once Yeates arrives he is a fish out of water. Both at the court and the house he rents. While Philippa follows him to Ireland as she knows Lady Knox.

Her grandson Flurry Knox (Bryan Murray) becomes a friend of Yeates but he has his own agenda. Such as telling him that the house he rents is haunted. Yeats not realising that people are going from the door at the back, which is meant to be permanently locked.

Peter Bowles made his name as someone more knowing and conniving in shows like The Bounder. So the Irish R. M. was a change of pace and style for him.

Not sure the material best suited him in the opening episode. Too much of lazy stereotypes and lazy writing. That is me viewing in 30 years after its original broadcast.

Maybe in later episodes Yeates might be less hapless.
