When a number of old masters are stolen from a penthouse in London, Interpol suspect art dealer Wolf Barstrom may be involved and Inspector Duval is asked to help Scotland Yard with their investigation. Their suspicions are aroused when Barstrom is found at London airport, bound for New York with six paintings - only for them to be perfectly genuine works by a modern artist. The body of her father, who they believe helped plan the theft, is pulled from the Thames and Duval realises that she could also be involved - her work giving another way of smuggling the paintings out of the country, among the fittings of a liner. Arranging for the paintings instead to be sold off at auction, Duval forces Barstrom to show his interest.
