Originally this was intended to be the first episode of season three and was to have been a direct continuation of the season-two cliffhanger. However, because Carroll O'Connor, who was also the series executive producer, felt that the episode In the Heat of the Night: Rape (1989) was a much stronger episode and had a very important social commentary attached to it this was pushed back to air as the sixth episode of season three. In the (flashback) scene where Gillespie has returned to the precinct and is telling his officers what happened to him, he tells Tibbs, "I'm afraid we're going to have to send an investigative team back to the woods to pick up poor Paul Dugan." The character's name was Capt. Tom Dugan; never was he referred to as "Paul". See more »
