Alf vs. Fancy Fred!
31 March 2009 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Alf and Arthur are at a pensioners' tea dance. Spotting a well-endowed old lady ( Pamela Cundell ) on the floor, Arthur reminisces about the good time he had with her. When she comes over to ask him to dance, though, he refuses, and Alf is coerced into going onto the floor instead.

They accidentally bump into another couple, a local widow ( Fanny Carby ) and her lover 'Fancy Fred' ( the great Spike Milligan ). A fight looks set to ensue, until the women turn on each other, ripping off each others' wigs.

Back at his flat, Alf is enraged when a van parks outside, cutting off the sunlight. The driver is none other than Fancy Fred. Round Two begins...

A great episode. Spike Milligan had guested in two episodes of 'Till Death Us Do Part' as 'Kevin O'Grady' ( Paki-Paddy ), but left off the boot polish for this performance. There is something wonderfully Goonish about the posh voice he employs. His best moment is when he says to Marigold 'why don't you go back to where you came from?' to which Marigold responds with 'what was that?' and Fred backs off.

The late Fanny Carby worked with Spike on the 'Q' series, but 'Coronation Street' fans probably best remember her as Vera Duckworth's loud mouthed mother. Pamela Cundell is of course immortalised as 'Mrs.Fox' from 'Dad's Army'.

The last part of this episode - in which Alf becomes trapped while trying to clean Mrs.Hollingbery's windows - had been done before in 'Till Death Us Do Part'. Patricia Hayes' 'Min' was the owner of the windows on that occasion, while Alfie Bass' 'Bert' got to eat Alf's dinner in full view of him.

Funniest moment - Alf desperately wants a pee but cannot unzip his flies. Mrs.Hollingbery comes to the rescue wearing a rubber glove and holding a set of tongs!
