I Love 1996
Prismark103 January 2020
Amita Dhiri presents a look back of 1996.

Dhiri was one of the stars of the hit BBC2 show This Life. A look at twenty something lawyers sharing a house. A more adult and spikier version of Friends with added wobbly camerawork.

Unlike Friends. This Life did not go on and on. The BBC pulled the plug after two seasons.

In the cinema, traditional animation suddenly found itself on its last legs. Buzz Lightyear flew in with Toy Story. Disney and Pixar's full length CGI cartoon. The audience were wowed by the adventures of Woody the cowboy and Buzz the astronaut. This was a landmark moment in animation.

I always regarded them as a bit of a joke act but they had attitude and plenty of marketing pizazz. The Spice Girls burst onto the scene and took over the pop world. It inspired all wannabes.

Just to show that the Americans were not immune to novelty hits. The song Macarena was a big hit there and everywhere complete with its own dance moves.

There was no mention of Charles and Di getting divorced.

I always like to watch programmes looking back on moments from TV, music and film, e.g. 100 Greatest shows, and this offering from the BBC was a very interesting look at a memorable period of time. Hosted by This Life's Amita Dhiri, this show looks back to the year 1996, with topics including: Spice Girls, the TV programme This Life, the film Toy Story, the rise of Mark Morrison with "Return of the Mack", Euro '96 football and Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds' "Three Lions", lads and ladettes with TV programmes The Girlie Show and The Naked Apes, the film Trainspotting, the "Macarena" by Los Del Rio, and Lara Croft in Tomb Raider video games. Celebrity contributions include: Emma Bunton, Nicki Chapman, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Michael McIntyre, Kevin Day, Kelis, Trevor Nelson, David Quantick, Michelle Gayle, Jack Davenport, This Life's Daniela Nardini, Jackie Clune, Amita Dhiri, Jo Caulfield, Jenny Ross, This Life's Luisa Bradshaw-White, Kate Robbins, John Lasseter, Jenny Powell, Mark Morrison, girl band Cleopatra, Uri Geller, Paul Gascoigne, Jodie Kidd, Sarah Cawood, The Girlie Show's Claire Gohram, Rhona Cameron, Marcus Brigstocke, Kelly Macdonald, Los Del Rio's Antonio and Rafael, Vernon Kay, Debra Stevenson, Ben Miller and many more.
