Chinese Secret Agents, Submarines...An Odd Episode
16 August 2007 | by See all my reviews

The most memorable line from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episode Time Bomb was when Chinese agent Richard Loo almost looks into the camera and says "...we will emerge, the rulers of the world". Well guess what, just months after doing that 1965 episode, Richard Loo marched over to the I Dream Of Jeannie set and played more or less the same Chinese agent! This is my reason for liking this episode, as well as all this, there is even talk of submarines and the US navy! I almost expected Richard Basehart (Admiral Nelson) to march into the room where Tony Nelson was held captive.

The scenes of Tony held captive are just as interesting...Richard Loo and the other Chinese actor with him don't seem to be totally aware that this is a situation comedy. The regular stock laugh track seems to be used to remind viewers that this is a sit-com. But I am not suggesting this episode is dark, it also features the usual comical non-sense from the series regulars.

This episode gets high marks for being a memorable oddity, the teaser image of the "Red" at Tony's home door step (with a gun) is something you will not forget, not the sort of episode the series would do in the colour years, not the sort of story you would see in Bewitched. Not too bad at all.
