Hogan mentions his training at Mitchel Field. Mitchel Air Force Base (aka Mitchel Field) was located on Long Island, New York. It was established in 1918 to train pilots for WWI. It was decommissioned in 1961, and some of the buildings were re-purposed for Hofstra University and Nassau Community College.

The title refers to the apparel combination and common expression of "top hat, white tie and tails" which was a common formal dinner outfit and made popular in the movies by Fred Astaire.

It was while shooting this episode that Bob Crane met Sigrid Valdis. He would later marry her and have her replace Cynthia Lynn as Klink's secretary.
