Blind athlete Frank Riley, who works as head counselor at a camp for "visually-challenged" young people like himself, is told of a new surgical procedure which may give him sight for the first time in his life. But excitement turns to guilt when he's saddled with a new charge: surfer Scott Lee, who has recently broken off an engagement to a girl he loves but doesn't want to burden with his handicap. Said handicap is the sight-destroying Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), which is permanent and cannot be treated. Frank tries to prepare Scott for life without vision, but Scott can't imagine what potential his blindness will leave him with; he thinks more and more about suicide. Then things get even worse: Frank discovers that the surgery he anticipated won't do him any good, which leaves BOTH men ready to end it all.
