Character actor Michael Shannon has been nominated for his second Oscar for his role in the 2016 thriller Nocturnal Animals. "No Small Parts" takes a look at some of the other characters he's played in the past.
Convicted murderers Lita Morgan and Caroline Craig make an unplanned escape from Rendell State Prison when a guard suffers a heart attack. They stop (and kill) a passing motorist and are able to use his car to get into a nearby town to steal clothes, money, and guns. They abandon the car and hijack a bus in a rural area in order to get through a Highway Patrol roadblock, but Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams are suspicious of the bus's apparent paucity of passengers and follow it. The two women abandon the bus and make a desperate bid for freedom by separating, but they are physically and psychologically unable to cope with the rough terrain and the Highway Patrol's relentless pursuit. When Matthew's realizes they should have passed the bus, the skies are almost clear and full sun. The next shot of the bus on the back road shows fully overcast skies, the buses wipers running, raining with wet roads and water running in the gutter. The next shot of the CHP turning around to go on the back road shows partly cloudy with sun. There are also no raindrops on the bus or police cars. The scene must have filmed over hours of the day as bad weather moved in. See more »
