While Buck and the men are in Tucson, Marshall Virgil Packer rides in with a body. He asks Buck if he or his men will join a posse to chase the Mexican bandit El Lobo. Buck states no High Chaparral men will join him. Later at the ranch, Packer arrives to ask Big John. After hearing what El Lobo has done, Big John states he will not order but will allow his men to join Packer if they wish. Buck is against it because he knows El Lobo is hiding on Montoya land. If they are caught on Montoya range, Big John's pact with Montoya will be broken but Big John believes supporting the law is more important. The men agree to go so Buck and Manolito join as well. After Packer learns who Manolito is, Manolito is forced to leave. When they cross over into Mexico, Buck forces Packer to remove his badge. He tells the Montoya hands they are looking for stolen or missing cattle. Manolito joins El Lobo and tells him a posse is on his trail convincing him to hide on the US side at an abandoned mine. He leaves a sign for Buck indicating where El Lobo has gone. Packer is still unsure who to trust as they make plans to take El Lobo.
