At Tucson Sam receives a letter that causes him to leave in anger. That evening he returns to High Chaparral. The other men knowing there is a problem try to talk to Sam but he keeps the issue to himself. Later he says he must return home to kill his good friend. Between his answers and information from his brother Joe, they learn he has a Mexican wife and daughter who left him because of a dispute between her father and his foster father Ben Lynch over property. Sam admits his chances are not good. The men one by one decide to follow Sam to support him. At his hometown his Mexican father-in-law revels in the fight to come between Sam and Ben's son Tom who killed Sam's daughter. Tom unlike his other brothers has grown into a cocky young man who overrates his gun skills. Sam and his wife Trinidad reconcile to the dismay of her father. With the Lynch family on one side and the High Chaparral men on the other, Big John talks to Ben with both hoping to avoid blood shed. Sam realizing his life can be better with Trinidad decides to forgo a duel with Tom. However, the cocky Tom has a different view.
