An Apple for Teacher!
27 April 2008 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

A new teacher arrives at the Double Deckers' school - Miss Pettet. The boys are smitten instantly. Each sees her in a different way; to Sticks she is dressed as a cowgirl, to Brains she is wearing glasses and a mortarboard, while to Doughnut she offers his favourite food. Unhappy at no longer getting her friends' attention, Billie plans to leave the Gang.

When Miss Pettet is refused to permission to stage a musical show at the school, the Double Deckers rather kindly allow her to use their junkyard. Determined to wreck the show, Billie sews up the sleeves of their costumes...

The final episode sees the Gang beginning to grow up and develop an interest in the opposite sex - including Brains, who had always struck me until then as ( how can I put this? ) not very interested in girls. Billie's spiteful actions are motivated by the fact that the boys no longer appreciate her. She even tries to take away Tiger's favourite toy! Had a second series been made ( and how I wish one had ) it would certainly have been the last.

Though a big success in the U.K. ( and elsewhere ) it did not get the ratings it needed in the States. Perhaps American kids found it a bit too British for their tastes.

As far as U.K. fans were concerned though, the show was never off our screens, enjoying perpetual reruns throughout the decade and beyond ( along with 'The Flashing Blade', 'Champion The Wonder Horse' and 'Belle & Sebastian' it was essential summer holiday viewing ). The 'Whizzer & Chips' comic carried a strip, and there was an Annual published in 1971 ( along with a Glyn Jones penned novelisation ). The last sighting of the show was on I.T.V. in the early 1990's.

The cast moved on to other things, with Peter Firth enjoying the greatest success. Debbie Russ made a guest appearance as 'Herself/ Tiger' in the 1972 comedy 'Go For A Take', starring Reg Varney, and directed by Harry Booth.

Funniest moment in this episode - Billie seeing the teacher as a cackling witch! The teacher is played by Georgina Simpson, whose other television credits include 'Jason King' and 'The Persuaders!'.

So off rode the Double Deckers into the pages of television history ( the children's section, at any road ). Fondly remembered, a product of its time - an era when children were allowed to be children. And let's not forget that it was funny to boot.

How can you not love a show in which a stuffed toy is given equal prominence in the opening titles with the rest of the cast?
