The Hugo Montenegro ballad instrumentally introduced in the series pilot, is repeated and sung here in the background by the recognizable Mitzi Hoag ("Miss Essie"). The motif is quietly revisited at least seven different times in this series.
The closing scene contains a touch, a chorus, of authenticity a song of the era, the "Old Settler's Song (Acres of Clams,)" a Northwest U.S. folk song by Francis D. Henry (circa 1874).
