"The Truant" finds Hawkeye and Chingachgook accompanying orphaned boy Greg (David Hastings) to live with his uncle and aunt, Mort Bailey (Chris Wiggins, last of six) and wife Emma (Jacqueline Barnett, last of two). En route, an Iroquois lad named Long Knife (Tom Busby) takes a shot at Greg, earning a bullet in his leg from Chingachgook. It turns out that Long Knife works for Mort Bailey, who plots to take over the silver mine inherited by Greg, the nephew of Emma, but no blood relation of his. Hawkeye foils two more attempts on Greg's life, then must retrieve him from Cayuga Chief Red Cloud (Eric Clavering, second of three) before supplying enough proof for an arrest by Cap'n Millburn (Peter Humphreys, last of five). Once Emma proves her love for Greg, her only surviving kin, Chingachgook gets the last word: "eyes of love are never blind, find trail in darkest forest."
