When a Soviet tennis team visits Hawaii, a young female star decides to defect in order to be with her American boyfriend. What she doesn't know is that just before she made a break for it, one of her teammates brained a KGB man with a wrench over a diamond-smuggling operation, and now both she and her boyfriend are patsies in the murder and face far sterner justice than Hawaii can offer if they are captured. You gotta hand it to this episode, it IS different.
19 November 2012 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

I gave this particular episode of "Hawaii Five-O" an 8--simply because it was so very original. After 9 complete seasons, it is easy to imagine that the show would become stale and repetitive. Well, sometimes this was true, but here with "Deadly Doubles" the show is quite unique.

The show is a Cold War era drama--one you couldn't really do today. It begins with some sort of tennis tournament in Hawaii. One of the women players from behind the Iron Curtain defects with the help of an American player (Tim Matheson). Little do either realize but another player (Kurt Russell) from the same team as the lady has murdered someone--and takes advantage of the situation to pin the killing on the defecting player! And, while McGarrett and the team investigate, there is also a very unscrupulous Soviet secret policeman who is much more interested in making a propaganda statement instead of punishing the guilty.

While this is not a great episode, it was pretty interesting...and unique. I might have preferred a bit more action or excitement or better haircuts on the Soviet agents (their hair was way too Western in style). But, considering everything, it is quite good and worth your time.
