Unsatisfying episode only enlivened by the presence of the John Candylike Peter Whitney as Judd. Paladin arrives on a stage coach with pretty blonde Norah (Jean Allison who co-starred with Boone 15 years later as Grace Lambert on "Hec Ramsey") who is greeted by her very jealous husband Gil (Stuart Whitman). The town jerk, Ed (Murray Hamilton) convinces the town fool (Whitney) to put a burr under the saddle of a horse he says belongs to a guy who tried to make fun of big dumb Judd. Only the horse really belongs to Norah. When she rides it, she falls and breaks both legs. Somehow the incredibly jealous Gil overlooks the very suspicious Ed and blames Paladin. It's up to the man from San Francisco to escape and prove his innocence.
Nobody seems to be thinking in this episode. Paladin clearly likes Norah and it makes no sense to think he would do this. And there was just a face off with Ed, Judd and another guy. Think maybe THEY had something to do with it? Duh.
Whitney has had funnier parts on "The Monkees", "Green Acres", "Petticoat Junction" and other shows, yet he still makes an impression here as the half-wit Judd. It's amazing how much his style is similar to a character John Candy used to do. Perhaps Candy was a Whitney fan too.
