Broadcast in the UK whilst still unaired in the US, LAST CALL is a fine episode that is light on the death, darkness and scariness that have characterised most of the episodes to date. This time around, Frank Taylor meets with and falls for an attractive brunette who was killed in his favourite bar. Whilst piecing together what happened to the woman, called Julia, he spends several nights talking to her and a touching relationship builds up. This is the core of the episode and it is a credit to Matthew Fox and, most especially, to guest star Ruth Livier that the relationship is credible. That's what makes it important what happens to Julia and invests the audience in the outcome. While the scariness level is reduced, this emotional contact makes this one of the most effective episodes in the series and shows the real promise that it showed, sadly too late to save it.
