I suspect an episode like this is mainly a matter of taste. Grubby backwoodsman Hakes (Schallert) arrives in Dodge intent on continuing Ozark feud with the Monger family by shooting John Monger (Griffiths). Matt's unsure what to do since he can't keep Hakes locked up indefinitely. Now both men are armed and looking to meet up.
It's hard to take the drama too seriously since the hillbilly characters are played so broadly. I would love to have been on the set when Schallert and Griffiths two of Hollywood's more literate performers had to recite the primitive (and sometimes ludicrous) dialog. Then too, under the make-up, that's Rose Marie of the old Dick van Dyke Show. Quite a contrast for her. Anyway, it's mainly a tongue-in-cheek entry for the Xmas holidays, circa 1957, with a fairly predictable ending.
