Storyline

At Cibola Blanca, a hideout for ex-Confederate soldiers and Comancheros, Evans steals jewels and seriously wounds Ben Shindrow, son of Colonel Lucius Shindrow, leader of the outlaws. Major Coltrain sends a search party, led by Ivors, to capture and return Evans. In Santa Fe the outlaws kidnap Doc Adams and his medical colleague, Lyla, on their way home from a convention in San Francisco. At Cibola Blanca, Doc encounters a Dr. Rhodes, a junkie who has addicted the paralyzed Ben to laudanum. Doc takes over Ben's treatment. Ivors attacks Lyla, and Doc swears vengeance. Meantime, Matt Dillon, Festus Haggen and Newly O'Brien are on the trail of the kidnappers, disguised as gun runners. Written by richardann

Trivia

According to a book on "Gunsmoke"'s history, Amanda Blake saw a draft of the script during the 1973-74 season and refused point-blank to do this episode, which has Kitty getting raped, beaten, exposed in the desert and getting into a cat fight with another woman. Producer John Mantley dug in his heels and planned the episode for the following season - without Blake, who left "by mutual consent." The role was not rewritten and the character was Kitty in all but name. See more »

Part two has been set up for a dandy show.

Even though, at times, the first part of this two part show seemed long, what it did was set up a good story that will continue into part two.

It begins at a camp of ex-confederates and renegade Comancheros when one of the gang members decides to rob from the gang's money box and flee the area. But the gang sends some members out to return the robber. They find him riding in a stagecoach that is also occupied by Doc Adams and his companion named Lyla. They take Doc and Lyla back to the gang's hideout where Doc attends to the gang leader's paralyzed son.

Lyla is fighting off advances from one of the members named Ivers. But it get bad when Ivers sexually assaults her making her need the care of Doc Adams. Doc swears he will kill Ivers for what he has done.

Meanwhile Marshal Dillon, Festus and Newly have commandeered a wagon of Cavalry rifle and ride out to the gang's hideout disguising themselves as gun-runners. Perhaps they can get into the gang's area pretending to be outlaws.

This episode is actually very entertaining. There is a lot going on in the outlaw's camp that does not linger itself to boredom. Even with some extending dialog, this episode has set part two up to be a dandy of a show.
