Good episode with a good looking woman
LukeCoolHand27 October 2021
This was a very good episode. One regular reviewer referred to the actress in this episode, Norma Crane as having a plain face. Another regular reviewer referred to her as eye candy. Well I guess that proves beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. As for me, I really liked the way she looked even though she was a little on the unusual side as far as looks, but that was the appeal to me. Anyway this a very good episode and I won't review the plot since others have done a good job on that. Also it was odd seeing the professor from Gilligan's Island as a bad man.

Denver Pyle's acting is notable in this episode
kfo949411 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Denver Pyle plays a big softy named Mike Blocker that is set to marry a young beautiful girl, Tilda. The young Tilda has been in the west for a short time but has finally found a man in Blocker that is nice toward her. Unlike others like the cowhand, Joe Plummer, that feels like Tilda should be his rather than married to the mild Blocker.

Plummer, in a scheme to get Blocker hung, kills his own friend making it appear as if Blocker is the killer. And with evidence pointing to Blocker, Marshal Dillon has no other option but to arrest Blocker for the murder.

The two things that stand out in this episode is the fine acting of Denver Pyle and the eye candy of Norma Crane. It was sad to know that some ten years later cancer would cut Ms Crane's life down way too early. Nothing really stands out about the story but it still was interesting to the very end. A nice story that was well played by all involved. Good watch.

Uncle Jessie, The Bear
jamdifo1 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The best part of this episode is the acting of Denver Pyle as Mike Blocker (Uncle Jessie on the Dukes of Hazzard). He plays a mild mannered man until he's pushed too far. Then he takes on a guy Joe Plummer (played by Grant Williams in his only Gunsmoke appearance) who has a gun and knife. We are glad to see that Denver wins and Joe Plummer gets his just desserts.

I liked everything about the episode except the very end. Why wasn't Dillon waiting outside the hotel room as Denver said good-bye to his new wife? And how on Earth does Dillon believe Denver after he beats up Plummer that Plummer set Denver up? On Denver's word? I don't understand Dillon's trustfulness at the end. I guess the writer's had to end the episode quickly.

Another note, the funniest part of the episode was seeing Chester drunk. Along with the facial expressions of Dillon and Doc on Chester loving the whiskey. But Chester sure sobered up quickly after the wedding.

Good, with One Exception

Good-natured rancher Mike (Pyle) is getting hitched to Tilda (Crane), and all Dodge is happy. Except Mike doesn't know Tilda's an ex-saloon girl and has been carrying on with one of his ranch hands, Plummer (Williams). Now Plummer's jealous and intends to disrupt things. But Mike's only jovial up to a point, after that he turns into a real bear. So Matt's got a problem.

The basic idea of a good man getting riled and jeopardizing his future is a good one. But, I'm not sure I buy the wrinkle with Plummer's buddy Webb (Johnson). Familiar actor Pyle is tailor made for Mike's part, ditto the rather plain-faced Crane. Then too, Chester's getting tipsy at the wedding reception is a real hoot. Plus, the final alley scene is well staged, while Matt's reaction seems apt in a thoughtful way. On the whole, another good drama from the outstanding series.

Little Point

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** I agree wholeheartedly about Denver Pyle's acting in this episode. A lot of people don't realize that saloon girls would often (if they got the chance) marry older men, even if they weren't super Lovey Dovey Perfect; if they liked them, that was usually good enough. Doing so could very well save their lives. Ol' Denver might have not been as pretty as Plummer, but he loved Tilda, and he was a good man.

I loved Kitty saying she'd probably "plant" the bridal bouquet. If you watched this show close enough, ALL the signs of stalking and abuse are right there in 1959. These things are not new to the scene; cops have seen it forever.

One little point is that Matt probably already knew that Mike (Pyle) didn't kill Webb. Remember Matt sent Chester after Doc? well, Doc mighta been a crochety Ol Scudder, but he was an exceptional Physician. There is no doubt that he noticed Webb had been hit from behind with a bung hammer, and Pete had said that Mike had hit Webb once before Plummer hit him. It was a baby step to see it had to be Plummer that killed his friend. A truly vicious scum. Matt did the right thing. Plummer will hang by the neck until dead for killing his friend. Exceptional show.

(*Tilda quote*) - "You shouldn't be here at all."

Joe Plummer is filled with vengeful jealousy when he hears that saloon girl, Tilda is getting married to rich rancher, Mike Blocker.

Plummer and Tilda were sweethearts, but now she's moved on to a man who's a better prospect.

When it looks like Plummer is out to cause some big trouble, Marshal Dillon investigates and takes charge.
