A Man's Best Friend Is His Cow
23 March 2013 | by (Claremont,USA) – See all my reviews

Old man Onie has a special cow. It looks ordinary but has a special quality— namely, that other cattle will follow it, especially when swimming across water. Now that makes the cow valuable to trail herders who want to be first to Dodge to get the best price for their herds. So when the old man and his cow disappear, trail herder Tush accuses his competitor Bert of killing them so he can win the race to Dodge. Matt investigates.

Unusual premise—I wonder if there really were 'gifted' cows like that. Suspense mounts as we wonder about the missing bodies of Onie and his bovine. Meanwhile, the trailherders are spoiling for a fight, while Matt works to keep them apart. There's a faint undercurrent of humor with the old man (Hatton) and his pet. All in all, a different kind of entry, well staged on open land that actually resembles Kansas.
