When two rowdy men come into the Long Branch to drink they produce a large amount of money they said came from a years wages while working the mine in Colorado. But just after a few drinks one of the men, Jake Bayloe, gets angry at his partner and starts a scuffle. Chester tries to break it up but ends up hit in the jaw. Bayloe then pulls his gun and shoot his partner in the chest killing him.. During the gunfire Kitty, who is attending to Chester, is badly wound from a stray bullet. Bayloe gets on his horse and rides out of town.
Matt tracks Bayloe to a lonely place out on the prairie and is taking him back to Dodge. But while on the trail, someone keeps firing from above a hill on Marshal and his prisoner. No one is sure why this person is firing but it will lead to a climax before we learn the reason the third person was shooting
The story was interesting and the actors performed well. George Kennedy was well cast as the rough Bayloe that Matt has to forcefully return to Dodge. By the time the story is ending we finally get back to Dodge to check on Kitty. I do think you can say, without a spoiler alert since the series continues for fourteen more years, that Kitty will pull through and be serving drinks during the next broadcast. The real plot is the story was Bayloe and his partner. Good watch.
