Quotes

Ben Corder: Marshal, we make money gambling. And, uh, once in awhile you know how it is, a player'll lose a little money. Make a fuss about it. Sometimes he might even go to the law about it.
Marshal Matt Dillon: Mmm hmmm - and when he does, he's usually been cheated. And before he gets to the law, there's usually been another killing.
Ben Corder: We make a lot of money gambling, Marshal. And we just want you to know in advance you're going to get your share of it. That's all.
Marshal Matt Dillon: Well, let me tell you something. Both of you. I don't know ...

An Average Gunsmoke, which Is Still Better Than Most
13 September 2011 | by (Claremont,USA) – See all my reviews

Average episode with at least one special feature. Two crooked gamblers try to bribe Matt. Instead, he runs them out of town. Angered, the gamblers hire gunman Toque (Conway) to take out the troublesome marshal. What they don't know is that the gunman and Matt are old friends, that is, before Toque developed a hatred for lawmen. So what will happen now.

I like the way a chance happening on the street alters the outcome. That seems more like real life where random events sometimes count heavily. Such imaginative details typify many of the early entries and help distinguish the series from its many competitors of that day.

Conway certainly looks the part in his flat black hat and moody demeanor; at the same time, the gamblers are appropriately obnoxious. However, I wasn't as affected by the climax as circumstances would, I think, warrant. I suspect it's because there doesn't seem much warmth between the two old friends, thus diminishing the impact.
