A step in the right direction
MaxBorg8926 February 2008
The pilot episode was watchable but occasionally irritating for its Meredith-centric script. In the second show, series creator Shonda Rimes seems to have understood the supporting characters are much better and sidelines the heroine, while still, unfortunately, feeding her chunks of nearly indigestible narration.

Among the highlights of the episode we have Dr. Burke's (Isaiah Washington) discovery of the fact he might not become chief of surgery once the boss retires, Cristina (Sandra Oh) being forced to work with the unbearable Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) taking care of a Chinese woman who can't afford proper medication (one of the few truly moving moments of the season). As for Meredith, she is stuck with the dullest job of all: looking after the severed penis of a rapist, whose victim is struggling to survive in the O.R., until the police arrive.

The penis storyline provides several laughs, most of which are quite cheap - a clear sign of how badly that kind of comedy matches with a medical drama. Only Dr. Shepherd's remarks to the rapist near the end of the episode are likely to raise a sincere smile, thanks to Patrick Dempsey's faultless charm, a weapon he employs repeatedly, especially in the doc's hilarious attempts to seduce Meredith. Not that he's alone in the scene-stealing: Oh, playing the most interesting of the interns, has a ball squaring off with Chambers, who injects his role with a "bad boy" charisma that makes up for any lack of depth, and Chandra Wilson is simply unmissable when her character, Dr. Miranda "The Nazi" Bailey, tells Burke what a jackass he really is - in less than 10 seconds! So, how does this rank in the end? Well, it's above "good", that's for sure, but still not quite "highly recommendable".

Good

First, a goof: When George is brushing his teeth while talking to Christina about running the codes that day, he gets toothpaste-spit on his cheek. The camera goes to Christina for a second while she says: Because you're George and I am Christina, and when the camera goes back to George, the spit is gone.

What I like about this episode, is that we get to know the other characters more. Meredith is kinda in the backseat for this one. We learn that Christina is driven and only interested in the medicine, and that Izzie is quite the opposite of her, just a warm, kind person who really cares.

Meredith shows us that she is a talented doctor, but without being arrogant at all. I like that they show us she's got skills, but not overdo it.

You start to build up respect for both Burke and Sheperd as they show they are great surgeons, but still care. And of course, Sheperd is crazy charming and dreamy. I like the chemistry between him and Mer, it feels realistic

Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with Meredith, she starts with a new workday at the hospital. Meredith kissed with Derek in the elevator. Meredith tried to help the doctor at the baby department, but she didn't got a good response from it. Izzie looks at Qing Lu her arm, it has been heavily wounded. Meredith tells Cristina that she kissed with Derek in the elevator this morning. Izzie gave Ahn her medical help. Katie gets another seizure. Nice Episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 1, a good follow-up Episode. I already just love this Series, it is just my type of series. Meredith is just a strong and great doctor, she know everything!

Great Second Episode

Warning: Spoilers
It's usually the Pilot episode in TV shows that are remembered well and always brought up but I just want to commend the second episode of this show. I am rewatching the series and I remember most of the second episode's storylines. And I really appreciate it now that I know more about the character already and especially Meredith, most of the characters have always been consistent with how they are (Meredith not following protocol and talking to the baby's parents to many other things she did in the coming episodes and seasons). There was a time when I felt like her actions were too much but I realized it's how she's always been.

And the soundtrack is amazing. Great choice of songs. It really complements the events in the story.

If I hadn't known better, I would think that Burke is Meredith's love interest just because of the stuff that happened in this episode. What an interesting what-if. This is just probably me so not gonna delve deeper on that.

The One With Severed You-Know-What...

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy this episode. It's a good followup to the series premiere.

In this episode, a rape victim is admitted to Seattle Grace, who managed to hold onto a piece of her attacker. His penis. That's right. She bit it off. How freaking badass. And what a great idea if you're being attacked. Meanwhile, Izzy helps a patient who can't speak English, outside of the hospital, so she won't get deported.

Fun Fact: Cristina is the first person to call Derek, "McDreamy".

Best part of the episode: When they discover the rape victim bit off her attackers' penis.

Worst part of the episode: The Izzy sequence.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.
