Will things get too hairy for young Grady?
10 September 2013 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

It would appear that Goosebumps decided to end season one with a whimper as opposed to a bang, with this story (stretched into two parts) feeling very much like one of the lesser tales written by R. L. Stine.

William Fruet is the director, and Neal Shushterman adapts the source material into kid-friendly TV, but the only reason to watch this is to see a teeny tiny Brendan Fletcher in an early role. Fletcher has been an actor I've always kept an eye out for since first seeing him in Freddy Vs. Jason and he's the best thing in this episode.

What's the actual plot? Well, Fletcher plays Grady Tucker, a young boy who has to move into the middle of Fever Swamp with his family and soon finds himself worried about what may be lurking in the shadows around him. Is there a werewolf out to get him, or is he just getting himself unnecessarily worried by a local hermit (Don Francks)?

It's not that this is a particularly BAD episode, it's just not a very good one. Despite attempts to add tension and throw in a surprise or two, this just seems too safe and predictable. Admittedly, young viewers may be kept on their toes by the thing, but I'm not too sure.

The concluding episode, sadly, isn't any better.
