The grass isn't always greener . . . .

Written by Charles Lazer (from the R. L. Stine book, of course) and directed by William Fruet, this is another fun episode of Goosebumps that mixes some kid-friendly scares with fun, fun, fun.

Major McCall (David Hemblen) is the kind of neighbour that you don't want if you're a kid. He keeps his garden spotless, and claims anything that ends up on his property. Joe (Lance Paton) and Mindy (Kerry Segal) are the kids living next door. Perhaps some unique garden gnomes might make their situation better. Or perhaps they might make it worse.

This rattles along at a good pace, like most of the better Goosebumps episodes, and Paton, Segel and Hemblen all do just fine in their roles. As for the gnomes, they're shot in a way that allows them to exude both mischief and menace.

Lazer's script may not be the sharpest, this show isn't really known for its memorable dialogue, but Fruet directs the whole thing very well, using some easy, fun, perspective tricks to help bring the story to life.
