Nobody is happy when Slappy gets chatty.

A lot of people rate this Goosebumps episode as one of their all-time favourites and it's not hard to see why. It nicely balances the scares with the less unnerving moments while everything builds towards an enjoyable finale with a great punchline.

Maggie Castle plays Amy Kramer, a young girl who is given a new ventriloquist dummy by her father one day. The dummy is called Slappy and she's quite impressed with it, at least until it starts to insult those around her and keep hold of her hand to make her look like the guilty party. Yes, Slappy is one of those spooky dummies that's actually alive.

Slappy is a creepy, memorable central character and, I'm sure, one indelibly etched on the memories of a generation of young Goosebumps fans. Maggie Castle does well enough in the role of Amy and Caterina Scorsone, Andrew Sardella, Gina Clayton and Richard Fitzpatrick all do well as her family members, but this is all about Slappy being lively and mean.

Ron Oliver directs and keeps the tone just right. It gets dark and scary, of course, but then always gets to a lighter scene just in time to allow some respite. Until the tense ending.

If you only see one episode of Goosebumps in your life then this is one of the best that you could give your time to.
