Hazel: Good evening, sir, I wonder if you could spare a minute.
Gary: Ah no, don't tell me; you're an unemployed young person who's decided to get on their bike and you're here to give me the opportunity of buying a genuine, Jurassic Park, solid plastic tax disc holder for the bargain price of...
Hazel: Ah no, I'm collecting for charity. I put a plastic bag and a card through your door yesterday to say we'd be round collecting unwanted clothes, yeah?
Gary: Oh, yeah, sorry, yeah, sorted some out for you.

Did Gary marry Phoebe?
11 June 2016 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After the events of the previous episode Gary decides that it is perhaps for the best if he stops visiting 1940 and spends more time with Yvonne instead. Then he hears a news report about an eighty year old woman named Phoebe Sparrow and starts to wonder if she is the Phoebe from the Royal Oak and they are destined to marry. This changes everything and he decides to go back again to see her. He needs an excuse to tell Phoebe so claims that he and Ron are going to Lithuania to watch England play in a football match… he even pays for Ron to go to Lithuania! With his plans in place he heads back to 1940 and is promptly run over in the fog. He awakens in hospital with Phoebe and PC Reg Deadman by his bedside. Things promise to get awkward when Reg goes through Gary's bag and finds his address... actually the address of his grandparents. Reg sets off to inform Gary's supposed wife what has happened and returns saying that she is with another man. Gary feigns shock and Phoebe realises that she could have a future with Gary after all. Back in 1993 Reg tells Yvonne that Gary isn't back yet because he was arrested in Lithuania for indecent exposure! Gary will have some explaining to do when he gets back.

This was another enjoyable episode with plenty of laughs; the best being Ron's story about what happened to Gary; it was imaginative, funny and guaranteed to get Gary into trouble; Victor McGuire is very good in the role. While Gary's part of the story wasn't quite as funny it was still amusing enough and advanced to plot to the point where a relationship between Gary and Phoebe seems possible again. It is assign of the quality of the show that it is possible to be both hopeful that this relationship will blossom as well as hoping things go well with Yvonne… Gary is clearly a potential two-timer but Nicholas Lyndhurst's performance keeps him likable. The final scene where Gary goes to see Phoebe Sparrow in 1993 was amusing and made it clear that it wasn't the Phoebe he knew leaving the question of how their relationship develops as unanswered as ever.
