Where's the beef?
13 November 2011 | by (Hampshire, England) – See all my reviews

Someone is stealing the beef at The Tower of London, meaning that the its world famous guards, the beef-eaters, are fading away. It's up to The Goodies (Tim Brook Taylor, Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden) to investigate...

The Goodies is one of my favourite classic comedy TV series, not just of the 70s, but of all time—a zany sitcom full of inspired surreal moments and brilliant madcap humour—but The Tower of London, the very first episode from series one, isn't exactly the most auspicious of debuts, the laughs coming nowhere near as thick and fast as they do in later episodes.

The guys' crazy, off-the-wall style is established almost immediately with a suitably surreal opening scene where they check out their new digs, but unless the word 'beef' has you in stitches, this one will prove to be a frustratingly patchy affair overall, the few really ingenious moments rubbing shoulders with too many mediocre visual gags and lacklustre slapstick. This episode kicks off The Goodies.... At Last DVD; the next one on the disc, Gender Education (from Series 2), is much, much funnier, and shows what the guys were really capable of when they hit their stride.
