One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest (#7.23)

Warning: Spoilers
And so this is it....

Having watched the 7 seasons in the past few months I got to love the characters and was worried to see the ending. But they made it beautifully.

The way it ended was very unpredictable, since the character of Lucas never appeared before. But they managed to do it beautifully and perfect. Wrapping up the story by having all characters, including Stan, show their love for each other and how much they belonged together.

While the beginning made e laugh a lot, the final scenes were making me cry my eyes out. But the best thing is that most of them stayed together, which is good because it didn't feel like a complete good bye.

A perfect goodbye

To anyone that thinks Leslie Nielsen being 8 years older than Rue McClanahan makes him ineligible to play Blanche's Uncle... you're wrong. I've known Aunts only 2 years older than their nephew.

Anyway. It was a really nice send off for Dorothy. Finally after all the false starts during the series, Dorothy found what she was looking for. True love.

No Age Mistake
Reshein17 November 2020
Great episode! Love seeing the happy ending for Dorothy. She deserved a better husband than Stan.

Also, to the reviewer who said there was an age mistake with Leslie Nielsen portraying Blanche's uncle: My aunt is only 4 1/2 years older than I am. It is possible and more common than you realize. No age mistake here.

Series Finale of "The Golden Girls"
eluminater30 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had the perfect combination of laughter and tears. In this series finale where Dorothy leaves the house and the girls after marrying Blanche's Uncle Lucas, it takes her 3 different attempts to leave (as they did spend 7 years together). When she finally is able to leave for good, the atmosphere on the set at that time practically jumped out at me from the screen. It felt as if I'd lived there with them all and Dorothy was leaving me as well. It was THAT strong of an episode! Dorothy's return in "The Golden Palace" ("Seems Like Old Times, Part 1 & 2), in my opinion, was probably the most-watched episode of the series' entire run. I cried all over again! I wish the writers would have written Dorothy & Lucas in as new co-owners of the hotel. Possibly, "The Golden Palace" series may not have been so short-lived.

actors' age difference

Warning: Spoilers
I found it fitting that the first one to marry and move out was the one who supposedly dated the least.

Snarking about Leslie Nielsen being only 8 years older than Rue completely misses that Estelle Getty was 14 months younger than Bea Arthur. Also, I had a high school classmate with a nephew 4 years older than her.

The old magic reappears.
mark.waltz4 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After some weak episodes during season seven, it was very apparent as to why the series would not go any further with a full cast. Bea Arthur had only stayed six seasons with "Maude" and she was ready to leave after season six, but was convinced to sign for another season. But seven would be not so lucky for those who wanted more, and as they prepare to write her out, they bring on Blanche's previously unmentioned Uncle Lucas (Leslie Nielsen) who will sweep Dorothy off her feet and carry her off to Hollingsworth Manor. At first, it's a gag at Blanche's expense, but they take a genuine liking to each other, and Dorothy finally gets a chance at happiness. The writing certainly is superb, and the emotions are growing.

Golden Ending, Girls.
mackiedoodlewilson5 May 2023
Wow. I've lived in the U. K. all my life. I remember being a child of the 80s watching this show on channel four and laughing out loud. I wasn't 10 until 1991. I loved it. It's taken me all these years, thanks to channel five during lockdown and now Disney+ last year to rewatch and watch some seasons for the first time. I never saw the ending and I've just watched it now. It was perfect. To have Stan there also as he had been throughout was a nice touch.

The characterisation of all of the girls was there right until the end, the episodes were all funny in their own way. Dorothy would be my spirit animal I think. I just love her put downs and her humour.

I hated to see it end. Wanted more more more. But it ended on the right note.

Warning: Spoilers
I thought it was fitting that Dorothy found a new love and went off to get married as the series finale. Mainly because Dorothy was written as unattractive and men weren't interested in her. Her character is the brunt of jokes about her looks. Yet they somehow made all of that funny. I just found that it came around full circus for her. And she deserved that.

I think what I would have liked to have seen was Dorothy having individual goodbyes to Blanche and Rose.

I love that Dorothy married into Blanche's family.

I just about died with laughter when Rose repeated the line at the wedding.

The ending was bittersweet. Sad, touching, sweet, beautiful. I wanted more seasons, yet the ending was fitting. I know Rose, Blanche, and Sophia went to The Golden Palace. But that series didn't last. I think the character of Dorothy balanced things out. She was the conscience and rational of the bunch. No one could do quick-witted sarcasm and deadpan stares quite like Bea Arthur.

Anyway, really loved the series and will do a rewatch again. There's something really homey and comforting about the show. And that is besides it being laugh-out-loud funny. 10/10.

Perfect finale
safenoe31 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I remember the Golden Girls, and wow, it's hard to believe it debuted nearly 40 years ago, yes that long ago, yet The Golden Girls remains golden. Much has been written about the lauded series finale, written by Mitchell Hurwitz. Fourteen years later Hurwitz guest starred as "Koogler" in the Community episode "App Development and Condiments" and he was absolutely hilarious in that.

One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest guest stars Leslie "Naked Gun" Nielsen, and in fact his brother was Erik Nielsen, who rose to the position of Deputy Prime Minister of Canada.

Could The Golden Girls have continued without Bea Arthur, hard to say.

Wedding Day!
julia-3720820 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I certainly loved this episode, though surprised it only took 2 episodes from first date to the altar. What I HATED about it was the wardrobe choice for the bride. It was the most horrid wedding dress design in ALL of filmdom! What was the designer thinking with all the "loops" on the bodice? Never mind that a bride of that age,a smart, strong, independent woman, for her 2nd wedding, would not choose a full length, fussy white gown, especially not with a veil over her face, as if she was a demure, young bride. Dorothy would have worn something classic, sophisticated, in a sumptuous brocade in a creamy ecru shade, crepe de chine, or one of those other French named fabrics, more in keeping with the way she carried her statuesque self with confidence.

I guess I'm in the Minority Here
trosevear4 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Although I will admit that it was great for Dorothy to have a happy ending, the whole story was so rushed to the point of absurdity. Dorothy meeting Lucas in Part 1 and marrying him in Part 2 is completely out of character for her, and what's the big hurry anyway? Dorothy also rightly criticized Blanche in the Pilot episode for wanting to marry Harry so quickly, and now she is doing essentially the same thing. We're all supposed to believe that Dorothy & Lucas are soul mates or something, but that doesn't change the fact that they barely know each other. Why the writers couldn't introduce Lucas at least a few episodes in advance of the finale is a mystery, especially since it was well known by then that this was going to be the final season of the show.
