The biggest single laugh comes from the B plot.

There's lengthy laughter for Dorothy and Sophia when they come out dressed as Sonny and Cher in preparation for a mother/daughter beauty pageant at Shady Pines even though Sophia hasn't been a patient there in over four years. Of course, Rose mistakes Sophia for Doug Henning and Blanche confuses them for Cheech and Chong. It's minor when compared to Blanche's latest obstacle, meeting a young man (Mark Moses) who claims to be George Devereaux's illegitimate son. Blanche can't accepted this at first, but when she begins to think about how his paternity has influenced him, she begins to come to see his desire to get to know something about his father. That leads to a very tender scene between the two where she gives him with a photo of George fishing, something that Moses loves doing himself. It's a very tender episode that shows mother and daughter at their best together, and Blanche in a completely different unselfish light.

An Illegitimate Concern (#5.18)

Warning: Spoilers
One day a young man stands at their door asking for Blanche's deceased husband. He claims to sell encyclopedias but later he comes back saying that he is his son and wants to know more about his father. Blanche is devastated but later decides that she should accept it and tells the young man more about his dad. And Dorothy and Sophia participate in the Shady Pines Mother/Daughter Beauty contest.

Poor Blanche, her stories always seem to be so upsetting. But once again the show takes a sad situation and makes a beautiful story with great characters while sending positive messages.

And the beauty contest was a fun addition. Especially seeing the two dressed up as Sonny and Cher singing.
