Vanessa Peekskill (Shelley Fabares, "The Donna Reed Show", "Coach") has come to Schooner Bay wanting to visit Gull Cottage. Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) is reluctant until reading beautiful love letters Vanessa has from Captain Gregg written to her great-great-grandmother. As she stays there, the captain becomes increasingly attracted to her, while Mrs. Muir is jealous and hurt. With Vanessa wanting to buy the home, Mrs. Muir intends to leave Gull Cottage.
