For Want of a Gift
JordanThomasHall5 October 2017
Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) is taking on a more active role with Jonathan (Harlen Carraher). He teaches him nautical knowledge continually taking away from his homework, much to the chagrin of Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange). The Captain takes Jonathan into town to buy a gift for his mother to make up. They find a nice parasol, but don't have the $37.50 to buy it. Without money they look through the Captain's chest upstairs to find scrimshaw that Jonathan takes to antique dealer Deke Tuttle (Mason Curry) to sell for $37.50. Deke knows it is worth $500, but calls Mrs. Muir to make sure he had permission to sell, and has Jonathan come home. The Captain vouches for Jonathan's motives and tries a different route. He takes the scrimshaw to Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) as collateral for a loan for $37.50. Claymore wastes little time in trying to sell the antique, while Mrs. Muir closes in on uncovering what is going on.

The character of Jonathan is beginning to take on more prominence, with the first half of this episode centered around him.
