It wasn't until years later that networks realized they could draw big ratings out of doing "final" episodes of a series. So "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Beverly Hillbillies" and other great comedies of the 1960's never really got a chance to have the kind of goodbye party "MASH", "Newhart" and "The Mary Tyler Moore" shows got to do so well. But considering how poorly the engagement, wedding and birth of the twins episodes went, perhaps its better "Get Smart" close out with a standard episode.

In this one Robert Middleton (who co-starred with Adams as "Minnesota Skinny" in the Skittle Pool commercials--check it out on Youtube) plays another Asian master criminal, the Whip. The Whip not only has a whip but has a gong with hypnotic powers he uses to get Max to steal the NARCO 512 and bring it to him. In the episode's final scene, Larabee uses the gong to get the Chief to give him a raise among other benefits.

Though not special, this is not a bad episode to close out on. The Whip while not in the same league as the Claw, makes a good KAOS villain, and its good to see Charlie Chan's number two son Jimmy (Victor Sen Yung) as his henchman, Abe Fu Yung. There's some good verbal business between Max and the Chief, a nice visual joke with a sign claiming the Gung Ho Laundry is not affiliated with Don Ho and when Max enters the Whip's headquarters, all the beads come off their strings and fall to the ground--a joke repeated in the trailers for the new "Get Smart" movie with Steve Carell.

It would have been nice for Hymie, Agent 13, Harry Hoo, the Claw, Siegfried and the rest to get to say goodbye, but that would have to wait until the 1989 TV movie "Get Smart Again!".
