Sheila Ryan as a "Really Bad Girl"
16 March 2006 | by (Kentucky) – See all my reviews

"The Black Rider" was arguably the best of the 90+ episodes of "The Gene Autry" show. It had all the typical elements. Gene is a Texas Ranger turned detective, Pat Buttram is his comic relief sidekick-although his character (a prospector turned amateur detective) meets Autry for the first time and refers to him as "that Artery fellow". Buttram dons a series of funny disguises in his quest to help Gene find the evil "Black Rider".

The twist is that "The Black Rider" is actually a woman disguised as a masked avenger. Sheila Ryan (a veteran of the show and soon to be the real life Mrs. Buttram) gets to do a great over-the-top bad girl performance, as the title character is really a nasty piece of work- the most vicious character in the entire series. Her character is the sister of executed murderer Rocky Dexter and she is out to avenge her brother's death by killing all the members of the posse that captured him. She kills with obvious glee, and smilingly tosses a gold piece on the ground by each body-just to be sure everyone knows it was the work of "The Black Rider".

The episode is highly recommended, especially for fans of really bad girls.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
