THE GALLANT MEN: The Warriors 1963
"The Gallant Men" was an American television series that debuted on ABC in the fall of 1962. It followed a company of US soldiers from the Sept 1943 invasion at Salerno, and their battles up the boot of Italy. The series ran for a total of 26 episodes during 1962-63. Leading the cast is Robert McQueeney, who also narrates the story. McQueeney is a newspaper reporter who follows the company on their exploits. (Sort of an Ernie Pyle clone) The rest of the regulars are played by, William Reynolds, Robert Ridgely, Francis X Slattery, Eddie Fontaine, Roland La Starza, Roger Davis and Robert Gothie. There are the standard types sprinkled throughout, the joker, the card sharp, the loner etc. This is the 21st episode.
In this episode, Robert McQueeney, Roger Davis and Eddie Fontaine are being sent to Naples for a bit of leave. Their trip is however interrupted by a local German counter-attack. The trio lose their jeep to artillery and are forced to hotfoot it to an abandoned farmhouse. Also taking refuge in said farmhouse, are several other US soldiers and a trio of British types. The US soldiers are played by, Med Flory, Adam Williams and James Best. The UK types are played by John McLiam, William Beckley and James Doohan.
The group is trapped by a lone German sniper who fires at anyone silly enough to poke their head up. The group works on a busted up radio set hoping to be able to summon some help. A less than friendly group of Germans now show. The square-head types have even brought along a tank to help them root out the Allies. Needless to say the Allied side manages to defeat the Germans and destroy their tank. Then an US attack swoops in and chases off the remaining Germans.
This episode features one of the silliest excuses for a firefight I've ever seen. The Germans unload with cannon fire and multiple machine guns with no effect. The Allied side hits with every round including a two Germans with one shot scene.
The cast must of known the series had been not been renewed and they look it. This one has it all, a bad story, bad acting and dull direction.
