According to Director James Burrows, this episode was originally planned to be the season finale. However, Burrows insisted that viewers cared more about the fate of Ross and Rachel's relationship rather than the baby and it was moved up to be the penultimate episode of the season instead.
Guest star Leah Remini (Lydia) originally auditioned for the role of Monica. Coincidentally she and Courtney Cox share a birthday together (June 15th).
The nurse who tends to Lydia (Leah Remini) is played by June Gable, who went on to memorably later play Estelle Leonard, Joey's agent, in future episodes. However, she first appeared as Estelle in The One with the Butt (1994), prior to this episode, but her scene was deleted.
Rachel hits on Carol's obstetrician Dr. Franzblau (Jonathan Silverman). Later in the series, Rachel's favorite movie is revealed to be Weekend at Bernie's (1989), which stars Silverman.
Ross mentions that Cody and Dylan were options for the name of Carol and Ross's son. The child who ends up playing their son, Cole Sprouse, played Cody on the hit Disney show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody (2005), and Dylan is the name of his twin brother, Dylan Sprouse, who was also on the same Disney show. He also mentions Julian. Cole and Dylan Sprouse both share the role of Julian in Big Daddy (1999).
