IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

Storyline

Ross is upset that he misses so many of Ben's first things. Phoebe finds out that her mum never showed her the ends of sad movies to shield her from the pain. Joey and Chandler take Richard to a game because it means a lot to Monica. They really like him so Chandler gets a mustache and Joey starts smoking cigars. Ben spends a whole weekend with Ross. Rachel isn't very good with babies and freaks out when she hears that Ross pictures their future with 2 children living in the suburbs. Richard spends more time with the guys than with Monica. But Joey and Chandler really hurt Richard when they tell him he is like a cool dad. Rachel is the only one who hears Ben speak his first word. Written by Anonymous

Trivia

According to the gag reels on the DVD, the cast had to retake the scene where Ross and Ben first come into the coffee house to see Rachel several times because the boy who played Ben actually began saying "Dada" when prompted by David Schwimmer. See more »

Goofs

When Monica is on the phone with Chandler and Joey they ask her what she is wearing and she says nothing but rubber gloves and they come bursting through the door seconds later, but the door to their apartment is closed. If they ran from their apartment that fast, they wouldn't have had time to close their door on their way to Monica and Rachel's apartment. See more »

Quotes

Monica: Hey. Where is he, where's Richard? Did you ditch him?
Joey: Yeah right after we stole his lunch money and gave him a wedgie. What's the matter with you, he's parking the car.

Once Again Matthew Perry And Matt Le Blanc Knock It Out Of The Park
12 December 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Plot In A Paragraph: Phoebe's view on the world is shattered when she learns how Old Yeller really ends. It only gets worse when she rents Pride Of The Yankies, Rocky and ET. Monica becomes concerned when Richard starts hanging out with Chandler and Joey, and they are so impressed with him they start modelling themselves on him. Rachel panics when she learns Ross's plans for their future.

Once again Matthew Perry and Matt Le Blanc knock it out of the park, this time with the help of the brilliant Tom Selleck. Their scenes are a highlight of the full season. The Phoebe storyline is fun, unlike the Ross and Rachel storyline. In an annoying inconsistency, in the episode titled 'The List' Ross lists what he loves about Rachel and he list "How great you are with Ben". This episode reveals she has never even held him before.
