His parents arrive and that's when Will learns that Phillip hails from North Carolina not Baltimore as he tells, and that he was a farm boy. When the reporter arrives, she decides to kill the story. So Will tells the reporter what his mother said about him and that's what ends up in the paper. Phillip sees it and realises that Will was the one who told the reporter.
