The cinematographer for the pilot was Bill Pope, who also shot The Matrix (1999) shortly before - he moved on to movies after Freaks and Geeks.
During the credits before while Seth Rogen is sitting on the stool you can see Jason Segel in the background rubbing his eyes to give the impression he was high.
Neal's line "She's a cheerleader, you've seen Star Wars 27 times. You do the math." came from Samm Levine.

Paul Feig wrote the pilot for Freaks and Geeks while touring with his film, "Life Sold Separately" on Tom McPhee's Flixtour - The Premiere Indie film tour that traveled to Colleges between 1996 and 1999.
