What's a Camshaft?

Frasier and Niles are embarrassed on a date when they have car trouble. So they decide to take a beginning automotive class. They are hopeless. They don't listen and they talk during instruction. I was a middle school teacher for 43 years and these guys would have fit right in with my worst classes.

More annoying Roz

Warning: Spoilers
I really dislike the episodes that Roz has a lot of screen time in.

Absolutely classic Frasier over the top shenanigans...as Niles and Frasier flip flop from over achievers to just coasting by.

I love when the boys really lean into absurdness with both feet...and this doesn't disappoint.

This is, for me, one of those episodes to look back at fondly. The one where Niles and Frasier take an automotive course....and it goes predictably how you would think it would go with these 2 snobs.

This episode could have been either 10 more minutes of Frasier of Niles, 10 less minutes of Roz...or just a 10 minute episode of Frasier and Niles. I really wished there was a 3rd scene instead of just 2. There was more meat on this bone.

"Here, let me strip one" "We're not IN trouble. We ARE trouble" I gave this a 6 for too much Roz...and not enough Frasier and Niles.

Unintelligent Drivel

Warning: Spoilers
Frasier was and still remains one of my favourite television shows. I love it. However this episode "Motor Skills" from season 8 has to be one of the worst episodes of the series.

After their car stalls while driving home from an outing, Frasier and Niles realise they have absolutely no automotive knowledge and decide to enroll in an auto shop course.

Although initially enthusiastic, they soon find the course difficult. The teacher, Randy, tries to help them. However rather than accept that they will just have to work harder than they initially thought to achieve a successful outcome, they instead effectively give up, and decide instead to become the class clowns, being extremely disrespectful to both the teacher and the class and behaving like complete fools.

I guess because we understand that both Frasier and Niles were extremely high academic achievers when they were students themselves, and would not normally have treated a teacher or class this way, that somehow it is OK now, that they are somehow just playing out a harmless fantasy to be the 'coasters' who don't try and just dis everything.

When you are in your forties and in the presence of others who want to learn, or in the case of the teacher, want to help you learn, it is not cool to behave like that. It was not funny, it was ridiculous and I think quite insulting. Frasier and Niles just looked like morons. The episode lacked the familiar Frasier charm and just not entertaining.

Motor Skills

This is yet another episode from the eighth series of 'Frasier' that has a decent premise but ultimately ends up wasting it.

The writers do a good job in teaming Frasier and Niles up for the first time in a while. But the whole latter half of their story is rubbish, with the brothers coming across as obnoxious.

The Roz and Martin storyline is ok enough, but when you finish the episode you are left with a sense of "what a load of old nothing that was".

For whatever reason, 'Frasier' for me was really struggling at this point - unable to find decent plots of momentum. You can watch some of the earlier series and there's barely a dud episode in there. In Series eight finding a good one is a hard task indeed.
