I have seldom been touched like this by fiction.

Hell, I am seldom touched like this by real life. Maybe it is because in real life people are not often so hopeful as Nick Knight is. He hopes to overcome what he is. And what is he? He is, simply enough, the sum of what he has done. He has hurt so many. (He is afraid that he will hurt so many more.) But he HOPES to be better. Don't we all? Is there one among us who doesn't wish for this very same thing? Isn't there a bit of Nick Knight is us all? ***Spoilers follow***

But for 3 years we watched Nickolas hope. We watched him struggle to overcome himself and his past. And what did we see on that May night in 1996 (or whenever you purchased this on DVD)? We saw Nick surrender. We saw him give up his hopes at a new life and his hopes of redemption and his constant drive to be better. We saw him betray Natalie's hopes and we saw him not be able to bear life without his or her hopes. If he can give up "this precious gift", can't we all?
