Filming of the colliery scenes was done at Thornhill Colliery near Dewsbury, although it was decided that it was too dangerous to take electrical equipment such as cameras, microphones and lights underground where there may be flammable gas, so a replica set for the coal face was built on the surface alongside the pit head. However scenes of Dora going down in the pit lift were filmed in the real colliery lift. See more
