FOLLOW THE SUN – The Highest Wall – 1961
This is episode 3 from the 1961-62 series, FOLLOW THE SUN. The series, which ran for 30 episodes, follows a trio of free-lance magazine writers. The three are played by Barry Coe, Gary Lockwood and Brett Halsey. The gimmick here is that they are based in Honolulu. Also with recurring roles are Gigi Perreau as their secretary, and Jay Lanin as their contact with the local Police. Of course the three newsmen are always getting involved with the usual assortment of nasty types.
Newsmen, Coe, Halsey and Lockwood are offered 5,000 dollars if they can get a story on rich recluse, Tuesday Weld. The girl had been a victim of a kidnapping when she was only 8 years old. After being ransomed she had refused to leave the family mansion. There were armed guards and high walls around the compound. Coe and Halsey assign junior reporter, Lockwood to see if he can find any info.
Lockwood spends several days on the case but gets no joy from any of his sources. But as luck would have it, Weld is being pestered by her grandfather, Charles Ruggles, to get out in the world. He has rented her an apartment under a false name and set up bank accounts etc for her to use.
Lockwood follows Ruggles car and discovers where he drops off Weld. Lockwood quickly rents a place in the same building. Over the course of the next few weeks he slowly worms his way into her life. After a while she loses her fear of the world, and the people in it.
That is till Ruggles pays a visit to Lockwood at his apartment. Ruggles has been having his grand-daughter followed just to keep an eye on her. Ruggles wants to know why a reporter is making time with Weld. Weld overhears this and flees back to the mansion.
Lockwood tries to get Weld back to the outside world, but her fears of another kidnapping win out.
Nothing special in this episode, but by no means is it a waste of time. Look close and you will spot a young James Brolin is a small part.
