The hour-long pilot episode was filmed in February 1981. CBS was unsure of their feelings for the show, so they kept the cast under contract and eventually ordered this second pilot, which was filmed in March 1982. In addition to cutting the show down to a half-hour, the network stipulated that they wanted this second pilot to be (in the words of series star Dixie Carter) "less bizarre" than the first had been.
