The hour-long pilot episode was filmed in February 1981. CBS was unsure of their feelings for the show, so they kept the cast under contract and eventually ordered this second pilot, which was filmed in March 1982. In addition to cutting the show down to a half-hour, the network stipulated that they wanted this second pilot to be (in the words of series star Dixie Carter) "less bizarre" than the first had been. Do you realize that if we start takin' the soap dispensers from service station restrooms and start usin' 'em right here in our home, we can save enough money in ten years to pay for that yacht slip in Palm Beach! It wouldn't really be like stealin'. I mean, after all, the kind of people that use those restrooms prob'ly don't wash their hands anyway.
