On trial

When the crew, apart from Chiana and Rygel headed over to Talyn to talk with Crais they didn't expect that they would seen be on trial for their lives but that is what happens. Shortly after arriving, Crais tells them that Talyn is becoming harder to control and he needs help disarming him; to do this he intends to install a dampening net which he his getting from a species known as the Plokavians. When they arrive Talyn opens fire and destroys they ship; immediately afterwards Crais forces them off Talyn and starbursts away. When a second Plokavian ship arrives they are put on trial with each of them being asked what happened. The Plokavians are determined to execute whoever was responsible for the loss of their ship even if it means killing them all! They each say what they saw but inevitably there are some discrepancies but they just see that as a sign of lying and it looks as if the crew is doomed until somebody stands up to confess.

This was an interesting episode; the way it showed the events from each person's perspective was clearly inspired by the film 'Rashomon'. It was interesting trying to work out who the real cause of the attack was as the various testimonies suggest different culprits. The Plokavians were fairly menacing villains as not only do they have a strange idea of justice but they also have a reputation for dealing in some of the nastiest weapons known available. It was also interesting to learn at the end that more than one of them had lied in their testimony for differing reasons. The ending was surprisingly tragic although it is hinted that the executed person may somehow return one day; whether or not that happens we will just have to wait and see.
